The author, Mark Schaefer, who wrote the Tao of Twitter, blogs about social media and has some great insights into how it can be used to help your business. For example, he shared a slide deck from a presentation on 10 Reasons Twitter is Essential to Your Content Marketing Plan. (It’s worth checking out his blog.)
Here are the top conclusions about Twitter that made sense to me:
- Twitter is an ignition point – You can bring your content to a widespread and relevant audience, without having to first build followers/connections such as Facebook or LinkedIn. There are multiple ways to approach this through searches, directories or hashtags.
- Twitter is a relationship builder – You can engage clients and customers. Smart interaction will build relationships and lead people to your content.
- Twitter can be a source of content – You’ll find breaking news and industry information. Items to share or blog about. Also, you can educate yourself through Twitter. Follow the links the smart kids are following.
- Twitter can legitimize your content – There is a benefit of “social proof” for your content, which means once people with credibility share your content, it gains credibility “by association.” There are also search engine optimization benefits to using Twitter, which helps people find your content.
Testing some Twitter advertising (sponsored Tweets) can also be useful in reaching specific customers or potential customers. For example, you can target Twitter advertising by geography, interests, keywords, who they follow, even what television programs they like. For more details, visit Twitter’s business pages.
